Dr. Gwynn completed his pre-medical requirements with a BS in physical chemistry and a MS in physiology at the prestigious Georgetown University. As an undergraduate he participated in cellular structure and molecular biology research regarding HIV and its potential treatment with Interferon B which is now an interest in COVID 19 at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

He continued on at Georgetown University for his medical degree where he graduated in the top 10% of his class. During that time, he conducted research at the Walter Reed Medical Center with a focus again on AIDS, ocular anatomy at Georgetown, pediatric ophthalmology at the National Medical Library, and in the Human Genome Project at the National Eye Institute in Washington, DC. He completed his residency in Ophthalmology at the Louisiana State University, renowned for its exceptional surgical training and served as chief resident there in his senior year.

Dr. Gwynn was selected for a Corneal and Refractive fellowship at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, one of the top 10 programs in the nation. As well as gaining state of the art training in corneal surgery, external disease and conducting research, he was on the forefront of the clinical application of LASIK and PRK in the beginning of its use in the United States with specialized and experimental lasers.

While an accomplished scientist at heart, Dr. Gwynn sought a profession to bring his skills to bear in helping the human condition. Ophthalmology, with its rapidly growing technology and the obvious bent of preserving sight, was the perfect choice to fulfill his goals.

With his background, Dr Gwynn is a pioneer in refractive, LASIK and cataract surgery as one of the first and most prolific surgeons in the county to perform laser and custom cataract surgery. With his 25 years of experience since and thousands of cases, he is considered one of the best eye surgeons in the country.

In his free time, Dr.Gwynn is an avid boater and fisherman in the waters off the southern California coast. He also enjoys spending time with his college-aged children, tinkering with his semi-classic cars, weight training, and skiing.
