Astigmatism Treatment

What is astigmatism?

Some patients may have an ocular condition known as astigmatism. This occurs when the cornea (the clear front window of the eye) is shaped more like a football instead of the normal spherical shape, like a basketball. Glasses, toric contact lenses, or refractive surgery such as LASIK can correct for the distortion in vision caused by astigmatism.

There are 2 ways to treat astigmatism during cataract surgery that can reduce the need for glasses following surgery. First, there are toric intraocular lenses which have astigmatism correction built into them. For those patients with higher degrees of astigmatism that cannot be corrected with these lenses, small limbal relaxing incisions (LRIs) can be made in the periphery of the cornea to change its shape from that of a football into the more natural, rounder shape.

These procedures are not covered by insurance. However, if you desire to have the procedure, Tayani Institute offers financing options that will allow you to correct your vision and see the world a bit clearer.
