Are you tired of spending hours at the gym trying to target a specific area of fat? For some people, diet and exercise can only go so far in slimming and shaping the body. Liposuction is a surgical procedure which improves the contours of the body and reduces localized fat deposits. It is most commonly performed on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and upper arms, but may also be performed on the neck and lower chin. Our team at Tayani Institute is pleased to offer liposuction in Orange County.

Good Candidates for Liposuction

If you are considering liposuction, you should be close to your ideal weight; liposuction is not a weight loss procedure and should not be approached as one. You should be in good health and free of any chronic medical conditions (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid problems) which could increase your surgical risks. You should also have good skin elasticity so that after liposuction, your skin will tightly hug your new contours.

It’s important that you maintain your weight after liposuction surgery. If you are thinking of having children in the future, we recommend postponing liposuction until after they are born, as pregnancy can negate the effects of the procedure.

The Liposuction Procedure

Liposuction is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours. Anesthesia is used to prevent you from feeling any pain during your procedure. Our plastic surgeon begins by making an incision in the treatment area and injecting a solution of saline, epinephrine and local anesthetic. This solution helps soften the fat cells, constrict the blood vessels and numb the treatment area.

After injecting this wetting solution, our plastic surgeon inserts a thin, hollow tube called a cannula. The cannula is moved back and forth to break up the fat, which is then suctioned from the body. Finally, our plastic surgeon closes the incisions and places a compression garment to help the tissues in the area heal.

Newer liposuction methods involve the use of a laser or ultrasound energy to break up fat before it is removed from your body. Liposuction can be performed on its own, but is also sometimes combined with other procedures such as tummy tuck in Mission Viejo.

Recovering from Liposuction

Your liposuction recovery will depend on what areas of the body were treated and their size. During the first few days after surgery you will be sore, swollen and bruised. You should avoid doing any bending, straining or heavy lifting until our team advises that you are ready. We will check you several times during your healing to check on the progress of your healing and clear you to return to work and exercise.
