Arm Lift

If you feel embarrassed about the appearance of your upper arms and find yourself hiding them under long-sleeved t-shirts, you may be interested in a surgical procedure called brachioplasty (more commonly referred to as arm lift). Arm lift surgery improves the contours of the arms by removing excess skin and fat. Our Mission Viejo / San Clemente plastic surgeon at Tayani Institute offers arm lift surgery and a range of other procedures to tighten and tone your body.

Arm Lift Candidates

If you have recently lost a lot of weight (or are simply noticing the effects aging has on the body) and have excess saggy skin on your upper arms, you may be a good candidate for arm lift. You should be in good health and should be free of any uncontrolled chronic medical conditions which could increase your surgical risk.

Arm lift is designed to remove excess fat and skin. If you have good skin tone and elasticity, and only worry about fat or flab, liposuction may be a better option than arm lift for your needs. Talk to our plastic surgery team about this during your surgical consultation.

The Arm Lift Procedure

Arm lift is an outpatient procedure that takes several hours. Anesthesia is used so that you remain comfortably sedated throughout the entire experience. To begin, our plastic surgeon will make an incision between the armpit and the elbow. The length of the incision depends on the amount and location of your excess skin. The incision may be placed on the inside or the back of the arm. Through the incision, our plastic surgeon tightens and reshapes the underlying tissue. Liposuction may be incorporated to help remove fat deposits. Then, the skin is re-draped tightly over the new contour of your arm and any excess skin is removed. Finally, our plastic surgeon closes the incisions with sutures and applies elastic bandages.

Recovering from Arm Lift

A loved one will need to pick you up from surgery and escort you home to begin your recovery. Your arms will be swollen and bruised, which is completely normal. Our plastic surgeon will prescribe pain medication if you experience serious discomfort. We will also instruct you how to care for yourself, including your incisions, as you recover. In general, it’s best to get as much rest as possible and avoid any strenuous activity which could disrupt your healing. Our plastic surgeon will check the healing progress of your arms several times and advise when it is safe to return to work, exercise and your normal daily activities.
