At Tayani Institute, we strive to stay up to date with the latest advances in our field because we believe our patients deserve the best technology has to offer. One of our doctors, Dr. Farzaneh Moin, offers an incredible vision correction solution called orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, to patients that want to reduce dependence on glasses or contact lenses without having to undergo surgical treatment.
Ortho-K is the practice of wearing special contact lenses at night that gently and temporarily reshape the cornea for clearer vision during the day. The treatment is most often used to correct myopia (nearsightedness), although it can be used in some cases of astigmatism and hyperopia (farsightedness). Ortho-K is FDA-approved and appropriate for patients of all ages, including children and adults.
Ortho-K patients undergo a complete eye exam and a special contact lens fitting, in which the curvature of the cornea will be measured and mapped. Patients may need to experiment with a series of temporary lenses in order to find the desired prescription.
Once the appropriate lenses are determined, the patient wears the lenses at night while they sleep; the lenses gently mold the cornea, without removing any tissue, so it can properly focus light on the retina. The lenses are easy to use and comfortable to wear. The patient removes the lenses in the morning and after a few days to a week, should notice less dependence on glasses and/or contacts. In fact, in some cases there is no further need for visual aids at all! The visual improvement lasts as long as the patient opts to wear the lenses at nighttime.
Ortho-K lenses are constructed from highly oxygen-permeable materials, which allow enough oxygen to pass through the lens and keep the eye healthy (even during sleep).
In general, Ortho-K is a good option for individuals that have mild to moderate myopia or nearsightedness and either do not want to have laser vision correction or do not qualify for surgery. Prospective candidates are invited to schedule a screening appointment with Dr. Moin to determine whether Ortho-K is a good option for their visual needs.
