Breast Augmentation Q & A

What is a breast augmentation?

A breast augmentation is a cosmetic surgery to enhance breast size and shape. A breast augmentation involves the placement of breast implants under your breast tissue or chest muscles.

Why do women choose breast augmentation?

You might choose a breast augmentation to:

  • Enhance your appearance if you feel as though your breasts are too small or that one of your breasts is smaller than the other
  • Adjust for a reduction in breast size after pregnancy
  • Improve self-confidence

You might also choose a breast augmentation to correct uneven breasts following breast surgery for other conditions.

How can I prepare for my breast augmentation?

To prepare for your breast augmentation, you consult with your Tayani Institute surgeon about your preferences for appearance, feel, and the size of your breasts.

Your surgeon takes plenty of time to explain the specific types of implants: textured or smooth, silicone or saline, and round or teardrop shaped. You also discuss the precise surgical techniques until you feel comfortable you have a clear understanding of what to expect.

You might need a baseline mammogram before your surgery, and your surgeon might ask you to avoid certain medications.

A breast augmentation doesn’t usually require an overnight stay, but you should plan ahead for someone to drive you home following your surgery and to stay with you for at least one night.

What can I expect during my breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is usually performed under general anesthesia. To insert the breast implant, your surgeon makes a single incision in one of three places:

  • Under your arm (axillary)
  • Around your nipple (periareolar)
  • In the crease under your breast (inframammary)

After making an incision, your surgeon separates your breast tissue from the muscles and connective tissue of your chest. This creates a pocket either behind or in front of the outermost muscle of your chest wall (pectoral muscle).

Your surgeon carefully inserts the implant into this pocket before centering it behind your nipple. Silicone implants are pre-filled with a special silicone gel and saline implants are inserted empty and then filled with sterile salt water after they’re properly in place.

Once your implant is properly in place, your surgeon closes the incision, typically with stitches, before bandaging it with special skin adhesive and surgical tape.

A breast augmentation could be the change you’ve been looking for to boost your confidence and get you closer to achieving your desired silhouette. Call Tayani Institute for your consultation or book online today.
