Understanding Dry Eye

Why Your Eyes Are Uncomfortable — And Why Drops Aren’t Enough

Burning & Stinging

Persistent discomfort that worsens throughout the day

Blurry Vision

Fluctuating focus that affects reading and screen use

Light Sensitivity

Sunlight and screens cause pain and squinting

Gritty Sensation

Feeling like sand or debris is stuck in your eyes

What Causes Chronic Dry Eye?

Blocked oil glands along the eyelid edges weaken your tear film, causing chronic dryness. This condition — Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) — is the leading cause of dry eye disease and affects millions of adults.

Common triggers include aging, extended screen time, contact lens wear, LASIK surgery, certain medications, and inflammatory conditions like rosacea, blepharitis, and Sjögren’s syndrome.

Why Eye Drops Alone Aren’t Enough

Over-the-counter drops only provide temporary surface moisture. They don’t address the underlying gland dysfunction causing your symptoms. Professional treatments are essential to restore natural tear production and treat MGD at its source.

At Tayani Institute, our dry eye specialists diagnose the root cause of your symptoms and create a personalized treatment plan that delivers lasting relief — not just temporary comfort.

I found Dr. Kevin Guck Tayani Institute In Laguna Hills a few months ago. I had been to so many Optometrist and Ophthalmologist for a horrible condition affecting both of my eyes. All these doctors diagnosed me with severe Dry Eye Disease and while they tried many procedures and prescription eye drops, nothing was helping me. When I saw Dr. Guck the first time, he diagnosed me with a nerve condition affecting the surface of my eyes, and he was correct. After completing several treatments, I left his office today with my nerves fully restored. While my eyes are not 100% normal yet, they are better every week. I can finally live my life again! They’ll just get better and better with time. Thank goodness for doctors like Dr. Guck who actually listen to the patient’s symptoms and who don’t just fall back on the standard diagnosis. If you’ve been diagnosed with Dry Eye disease and it isn’t getting better, please go see Dr. Guck and make sure you have the correct diagnosis. Also, wonderful staff!

The Tayani Institute is wonderful. My Dad, Dave McAllister, had been to eye doctor's without results until we were referred to Dr. Guck! What a blessing. He was knowledgeable and tried a different approach and he was successful.
My Dad is thrilled with the improvement in his sight and I can see by the twinkle in his clearer eyes that he was treated with utmost care.
He especially enjoys how attentive and patient Naz and Anahita have always been!
Fabulous customer service all around.
Check them out in Laguna Hills. You'll see the difference, just like my Dad!!

I recently saw Dr. Kevin Guck and I am extremely grateful for his expertise and professionalism. For over five years I have been dealing with one watery eye. I have seen several optometrists, as well as a couple of primary care physicians, who have all dismissed my symptoms as dry eyes. Dr. Guck is the first doctor who has actually listened to me explain my eye issue and did not immediately dismiss my symptoms as dry eyes. With one quick test he was able to determine I have a blocked tear duct. His diagnosis has finally set me on the path to being able to resolve the issue with my watery eye. I am thankful for his compassion and willingness to help. I will absolutely be returning to see Dr. Guck and will be selecting him as the new optometrist for my family as well. Thank you, Dr. Guck!

Frequently Asked Questions

Common Questions About Dry Eye Treatment

Everything you need to know before your first visit to Tayani Institute's Dry Eye Clinic.

What is dry eye disease and what causes it?

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes don't produce enough quality tears to stay properly lubricated. The most common cause is Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD), where oil glands in your eyelids become blocked. Other causes include aging, extended screen time, contact lens wear, LASIK surgery, certain medications, and inflammatory conditions like rosacea and Sjögren's syndrome.

What does IPL dry eye treatment involve?

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy delivers gentle, precise pulses of light to the area around your eyes. This targets inflammation, reduces redness from rosacea and vascular lesions, and helps improve meibomian gland function. Sessions typically take 20–40 minutes with no downtime. Most patients need a series of treatments for optimal results.

Is dry eye treatment painful?

No. All of our dry eye treatments are minimally-invasive and designed for patient comfort. During IPL, you may feel mild heat and pressure sensation. OCuSOFT® Thermal 1-Touch™ applies soothing warmth to the eyelids. Most patients describe the experience as relaxing, and there is no recovery time needed afterward.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on the severity and type of your dry eye. Many patients notice improvement after just one treatment. An initial series of IPL treatments is typically recommended, followed by maintenance sessions. Dr. Guck will create a personalized plan during your consultation.

Why should I choose professional treatment over eye drops?

Over-the-counter eye drops provide only temporary surface moisture and don't address the root cause of dry eye disease. Professional treatments like IPL, thermal therapy, and gland expression target the underlying gland dysfunction, restore natural tear production, and deliver lasting relief that drops alone cannot achieve.

Does insurance cover dry eye treatment?

Coverage varies by insurance plan and treatment type. Tayani Institute accepts most major insurance plans. Our team will help verify your coverage and discuss financing options, including CareCredit, during your consultation. Contact us for specific insurance questions.

Where is the Dry Eye Clinic located?

Our primary Dry Eye Clinic is located at Tayani Institute's flagship office: 25200 La Paz Rd, Laguna Hills, CA 92653. We also serve patients from our offices in San Clemente, Irvine, Brea, Newport Beach, South Coast (Santa Ana), and Oceanside. Call (949) 545-6639 to find the location nearest you.
