Scars are the result of your skin healing from a wound. They tend to shrink and become less noticeable with time, although they may never completely disappear. If you have a scar and feel self-conscious about it, explore the possibility of scar revision to improve its condition or appearance. Our plastic surgery team at Tayani Institute offers several types of scar revision techniques at our Southern California offices.
The severity of the scarring depends on several factors, including the size and depth of the wound, blood supply to that area of the face or body, the thickness and color of the skin and the direction of the scar.
The scar revision approach that we take is based on the severity of your scarring. There are several options for scar revision treatment, including the following:
We can use gels, tapes or external compression to help the wound close and heal, or to reduce your skin’s ability to produce an irregular pigment.
Our Mission Viejo plastic surgery team may inject a substance to fill depressed or concave scars. Injectable treatment results last anywhere from three months to several years, and should be repeated for maintenance. Steroid-based compounds are commonly used in injection treatment to reduce the formation of collagen and relieve the redness, itching and burning. Cosmoplast, Zyderm, LaViv and Restylane are examples of dermal fillers that can be used to soften the appearance of scarring.
In certain cases, we may need to remove the top layer of skin in the area of your scar. We can accomplish this one of three ways:
When faced with a deep or stubborn scar, our plastic surgeon may need to surgically remove it. We can cut out the scar tissue using a Z-plasty approach: first, the plastic surgeon creates triangular flaps of skin on either side of the scar, and then the flaps are re-arranged and interlocked to cover the affected area. In some cases, skin grafts may be used to treat your scars, but this involves the risk of scarring at the site of the skin graft.
